As Heraklion newspapers have published the new Jeraklion Airport will cost at about 1 billion euros and the funding of its development will be on a concession for a period of 35 years.

The new Heraklion Airport at Kastelli is expected to be visited from 5 to 10 million passengers per year. Operations at the old Heraklion AIrport "Nikos Kazantzakis" are planned to be stoped after the new Heraklion Airport start its function.
